Examining the Motivational Characteristics of Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers

This study analyzes pre-service social studies teachers’ motivations to pursue a teaching career. Mean scores demonstrated the four highest rated values for pursuing a teaching career related directly to visions of preparing young citizens. Qualitative analyses further support the tie between civic-mindedness and pre-service teachers’ reasons for entering the profession.
