Citizenship Education in Rural Contexts: Teachers’ Conceptualizations of Citizenship and Place

This study sampled five government teachers in rural schools to examine their conceptualizations of citizenship and place. Findings suggest participants possessed traditional views of citizenship and, while utilizing some place-based pedagogies, displayed a lack of critical consciousness of place in their citizenship instruction.
