Towards Civic Empowerment? Pitfalls of Good Intentions in a Middle School Civics Course

This paper presents how three White civics teachers address issues of race and civic empowerment in predominantly Black urban middle schools. Finding suggests teachers who are committed to teaching for civic empowerment may need extra support in helping students recognize, understand, and navigate issues of race and inequity.
