That glossy yellow border: Pre-service teachers, Critical Media Literacy, and National Geographic

This paper explores how pre-service teachers grapple with “Western” images and (hi)stories of “East Asia” as re/presented in National Geographic magazine. Using critical media literacy to analyze the politics of representation, pre-service teachers confronted and oftentimes debunked their own deeply held assumptions about East Asia, and also National Geographic.
