“We’re Rags to Riches”: Critical Consciousness of the American Dream in Culturally Diverse Classrooms

This ethnographic study in two urban U.S. History classrooms examined how teachers worked to challenge students’ common sense thinking and develop their understandings of social inequities. While students encountered some bottlenecks along the way, many did show an ability critique the status quo and a preliminary consciousness of social structures.
